| Did you know when the hurricanes landfall Carteret County, and the grid goes down, you still have an inexpensive way to reliably communicate? The 915 MHz Long Range Mesh radio project (LoRa) is a nation-wide, low-powered, decentralized line-of-sight radio network that uses inexpensive radios to communicate by text with friends and relatives when there is no cellular coverage, no WiFi, and no electricity! The Newport Mesh Network repeater is managed by Amateur Radio operator DJ Garner (N4DIV) and is located on the 300-foot tower on Robert's road. The system gives local users in the Carteret County area a way to communicate when no other method is available, making it an ideal back-up communications option for hurricanes, or just for fun. The best thing about LoRa Mesh radio is, unlike amateur radio and GMRS radio, there is no license required to use it, no fee to pay, and no tests to take. All a user needs is a small battery-powered radio that costs around thirty dollars in order to communicate with other LoRa Mesh users in and around Carteret County. Learn more about LoRa Mesh radio at the Down East Sideband Society website and at the Meshtastic website. ~drSOBX "Semper Vigilantes" | |
