WHEN: 11/30/2024 ~ 01/05/2024
WHERE: Newport Town Park, 240 Howard Blvd
COST: $5 and $10 per half-hour
Newport's new synthetic ice skating rink will open at the Newport Town Park at 240 Howard Blvd. on Saturday November 30th and run through Sunday January 5th, about five weeks.
According to Carteret News Times, Newport Town Clerk Kelley Caldwell has estimated the first-year cost of this project to the Newport taxpayer at just under $70,000.00. The leadership of the Town of Newport will attempt to recoup the taxpayers $70,000.00 by selling tickets to skate during the two-month period by charging $5.00 per child and $10.00 per adult for each half-hour of skating. Ms. Caldwell predicts the Town "could see" $47,625 in revenue with the skating rink open just one month. Newport Council member Timmy Quillen calls this figure "conservative". Along with the plastic skating rink, the Town will license a software package for approximately $5,000.00 per year that will enable people to buy tickets online.
Despite Councilman Ralph Williams Jr. expressing concerns that perhaps the Newport Town Council is "moving too quickly” while the town is still catching up on past tax audits, the Newport Town Council approved the purchase and moved to make the required $12,267.50 down payment to KwikRink Synthetics in Maple Grove MN, by reallocating money from the town’s $50,000.00 contingency fund.
We shall see about the plastic skating rink that can allegedly earn $50,000.00 in revenue in 5 weeks.
